The newest Resident Evil movie, The Final Chapter, is in theaters now. It’s reportedly the last entry in the series, and it’s going to be the one that pushes the entire series past $1 billion at the global box office, it seems. Deadline reports that the film already made $35 million in Japan (where it opened in December) and stands to make $70 million or more worldwide through Sunday.
That would push the entire series past $1 billion. The Final Chapter is the sixth movie in the series.
“Resident Evil is an event film internationally,” Sony Pictures executive Josh Greenstein told Deadline. “It’s been five years since the last film, and the global fanbase has been eagerly anticipating its return. Screen Gems has created the highest-grossing video game-based franchise of all time. We look forward to a strong rollout.”
Sony is already celebrating the billion-dollar franchise milestone by way of an Instagram video posted today in which the studio offered up “a billion thank yous” to fans.
Here is how the five Resident Evil movies have fared at the global box office (all figures via Box Office Mojo):
- Resident Evil — $102.4 million
- Resident Evil: Apocalypse — $129.4 million
- Resident Evil: Extinction — $147.7 million
- Resident Evil: Afterlife — $296.2 million
