Netflix has released the first trailer and announced the premiere date for its new show, 13 Reasons Why. Directed by Oscar winner Tom McCarthy (Spotlight) and produced by singer Selena Gomez, the show is based on the book series by Jay Asher. It follows the character Clay (Dylan Minnette) who comes home from school to find a mysterious box on his porch. In it, he finds tapes recorded by his classmate and crush, Hannah, who took her own life just weeks earlier.
“On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life,” reads a line from the description (via Collider). “Will Clay be one of them?”
13 Reasons Why premieres on Netflix on March 31. The tagline is “Why would a dead girl lie?”
Posting on Instagram today, Gomez talked about how 13 Reasons Why came to be. “My mom found this book in 2009 and worked her ass off to make it with me, guide me, and tell this story authentically (the only reason, beside Jay, this project was even made),” she said.
