Sons of Anarchy Mayans Spinoff Now Official, Written by Former Real Life Gang Member

The Sons of Anarchy spinoff Mayans MC, which had been rumored since August 2015, is now official.

Network FX today announced that it has begun script development on the TV show, which is co-created by Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter and Elgin James (Little Birds), according to Deadline.

James is writing the script for the pilot, while both he and Sutter are producing the show.

Mayans MC, like Sons of Anarchy, aims to be a “dark, visceral family drama.” It’s the same premise of Sons of Anarchy, but this time, the story is told from the perspective of a Latino character.

The show gets its name from the Mayans Motorcycle Club. That group played a major part in the original series; Emilio Rivera played the Mayans’ leader, Marcus Alvarez, though casting announcements for Mayans MC have not been made yet.

New Jersey-born Sutter said James–who was previously in a gang and spent time in federal prison–is the right man to lead production on the show.

“I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice,” Sutter said. “Because I didn’t think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice.”

It is still early days for Mayans MC; there is no word yet on when production will begin or when the show will premiere. Are you looking forward to it? Let us know in the comments below.
