Street Fighter 5 Sales Underperform, But Capcom Profits Climb

Capcom has detailed its financial results for the 12-month period spanning April 2015 to March this year, reporting an increase in sales and profit. This, in large part, is due to strong performance of its digital re-releases and DLC content.

The Japanese company’s net sales reached $714 million, which represents a 20 percent increase over the same period in its previous financial year. Operating income was $111 million, a 13 percent increase over the previous year.

PlayStation 4 and PC title Street Fighter V has been added to the company’s list of Platinum sellers, with sales listed as 1.4 million units across both platforms. In a statement accompanying its figures, Street Fighter V was described as a “perennial favorite and maintained steady sales mainly overseas.”

In May 2015, prior to Street Fighter V’s release, Capcom said it expected the game to sell 2 million copies by the end of the current fiscal year. This figure included copies sold digitally and through traditional brick-and-mortar retail outlets. Based on its own internal projections, Street Fighter V has underperformed.

Digital sales of its games have become a big source of revenue for the company, which re-released Resident Evil 0 Remastered for current and last-generation consoles, as well as PC. Monster Hunter X’s digital sales were cited 3 million units, which Capcom described as “overwhelming.” The 3DS title “helped to improve business performance overall.”

Monster Hunter Explore for Android and iOS has also proved to be popular, with downloads surpassing 3 million.

Looking ahead, Capcom indicated it will “will promote its profitable digital download sales, in addition to package products that have limited sales runs.” In terms of game releases, it highlighted Sengoku Basara Sanada Yukimura-den, Resident Evil Umbrella Corps, Ace Attorney 6, and Monster Hunter Stories.
